Hamish McArthur

I’m an IT and cybersecurity professional with more than 20 years of experience designing, implementing and managing information technology solutions for organisations across a range of industries. My career has followed two parallel paths, combining my work in IT and cybersecurity with my long-standing involvement in the media and audio post-production industry - and programming has been a constant thread throughout.

Over that time, I’ve worked with a wide range of operating systems, including Windows, macOS and Linux as well as several networking platforms, server infrastructure, Microsoft 365 and professional audio equipment. I enjoy working with new technologies, solving problems and building things.

Along the way, I’ve earned technical certifications from Microsoft and other vendors, as well as certificates in IT Management and Compliance from the University of Cape Town, and Advanced Computer Security from Stanford University in California.

I’m the founder and Technology & Cybersecurity Lead at Next Generation Digital, a South African managed IT services provider focussed on small to medium-sized businesses. We offer a wide range of IT services and cybersecurity solutions, helping organisations establish IT environments that are secure, reliable and aligned with their business needs.

I’m also the Technical Director at Sonovision Studios, a leading South African audio post-production facility. I’ve been privileged enough to work with their incredible team since I was 20 years old! I have a background in sound engineering and hold several certifications from Avid, including Avid Certified Support Representative for Pro Tools. While I don't spend much time in the studios these days, I still enjoy consulting on technical issues, and helping the team implement emerging technologies.

While I don’t consider myself a professional software developer, that hasn’t stopped me from creating a few genuinely useful programs - some of which have been quite successful. In 2010, I developed SPM, a line-of-business application for Sonovision Studios that is still actively used and maintained. I also launched the first electronic radio ad delivery platform in South Africa with Sonovision back in 2012. The platform was commercially successful, and was later sold.

These days, I spend most of my time working across my businesses, while continuing to explore new technologies and build things that interest me. I’m also working on a few exciting new software projects.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my kids, and I try to get as much time on the water as possible. I also have a passion for photography, music and astronomy.
